TOP TEN
"Best of 2017"
#10
CLOWNS
"Lucid Again"
Thoughts: This song is 9-minutes long and it kicks your ass from front to back... or is it back to front? I don't know. Just listen.
#9
FREYA WILCOX & THE HOWL
"Tooth & Nail"
Thoughts: 2017 was a notable year for female punk rockers taking over and Freya Wilcox is at the top of that list. She has so much soul and so much power on this track, I couldn't leave it off my Top Ten.
#8
HEARTSOUNDS
"Dualistic Nihilist"
Thoughts: There is only one song on the album and it's 19-minutes of shredding tunes. You're welcome.
#7
PROPAGANDHI
"Victory Lap"
Thoughts: Legendary punks, Propagandhi, continue to progress and keep pumping out stellar tunes. Here's my favorite jam on the new record.
#6
CRUSADES
"This Is a Sickness And Sickness Will End"
Thoughts: The guitars initially caught my attention, but the record as a whole does not disappoint.
#5
THE RIPTIDES
"Canadian Graffiti"
Thoughts: Classic feel-good punk right here.
#4
THOUSAND BELOW
"The Love You Let Too Close"
Thoughts: Newly signed to Rise Records, this local San Diego band stepped up and kicked ass on their debut record The Love You Let Too Close.
#3
THE GOSPEL YOUTH
"Always Lose"
Thoughts: Solid production. Solid vocals. The Gospel Youth write solid tunes all the way around. Notable tracks:
#1) I Will Deliver You To The Fireflies, #3) Wildfire, #5) Your Love Was a Cancer, #7) Moods Like English Weather.
#2
STORY OF THE YEAR
"Wolves"
Thoughts: Story of the Year is easily one of my favorite bands, so it wasn't hard to nominate Wolves as "Runner Up" for the Album of the Year. But at first listen, I wasn't totally sold on their sound. Then after a few rotations, it grew on me and I never looked back. Well done, lads.
#1
Brand New
"Science Fiction"
Thoughts: Although the bands frontman, Jesse Lacey, has been accused of sexual misconduct with a minor, I was forced to crown Science Fiction as my favorite album of the year. Every song on the record is solid and in a down year for music, Brand New rose to the occasion.
Thoughts: 2017 was a strange year, to say the least, so my feeling is that we can use more reggae in our lives.
SOJA
"Poetry In Motion"
Honorable Mention
